Is it okay to use reverse osmosis (RO) water with Noritz tankless water heaters?

Reverse osmosis water cannot be used with Noritz tankless water heaters. RO water will eat away at minerals in the copper heat exchanger¹. Over time the copper heat exchanger will develop pinhole leaks.

Noritz recommends the H2flow or Scaleshield products to effectively mitigate against scale² build-up.

Scale²
A hard mineral coating which forms on the surfaces of water piping. Scaling is more prevalent in areas with high water hardness.

heat exchanger¹
A device used to transfer thermal energy between two or more fluids (e.g. air, water, oil). The fluids are typically separated and not allowed to mix.
