An error code 50 indicates that the unit has detected continuous water flow of at least 0.26gpm or more for an extended period. This error is logged in the error history when water flow is detected for 24 consecutive hours.
Since this error occurs when the unit continuously detects water flow, it cannot identify leaks upstream from the unit itself. The solution depends on the location of the leak, which can be categorized into three main areas:
- Drain line leaks
- Internal unit leaks
- Hot water outlet piping leaks
If the leak is from the drain line, it may originate from the heat exchanger. A cracked heat exchanger, often due to scale buildup causing thermal stress, will discharge water through the drain line. In this case, the heat exchanger must be replaced.
For internal unit leaks, the cause could be a loose C-clamp or a damaged O-ring. Inspect the O-ring condition and replace any damaged components as necessary.
Lastly, if the leak is in the hot water outlet piping, the unit itself is functioning normally. In this case, locate and repair the leaking section of the piping.
